Nice Day!

Basketball

Hello all! Just got back from another nice hike with Blossom! After a rainy day yesterday, the sun has been out all day, and it’s been beautiful outside today!

Also, guess what?!!

I’m playing basketball again today. Yes, I’m pretty excited. Blossom is taking Miles and I to the local park to play basketball.

It’s going to be a fun afternoon!

Our (almost) Daily Walks

Almost every day, Blossom rushes in the door from work, runs us out to “do our business,” changes super-human fast out of her fancy clothes into sneakers and some workout clothes, rushes me back into the car and we drive 15 minutes to this amazing place, Bent Creek.

I love muuuuuuuuud!

I love muuuuuuuuud!

Miles can’t come right now because a few weeks ago, he got his crazy-eye on and started full throttle running blindly through the woods in hot pursuit of some furry creature. That night he could barely walk. So, Blossom took him to Dr. Bolt at the Sweeten Creek Animal Hospital the next day.

Everyone suspects he may have torn his ACL. I don’t know what that is, but, he can’t run for 4 to 8 weeks. He was kenneled for one week and he couldn’t understand why he was being punished. His sad eyes eventually got to Blossom and she decided that instead of kenneling him, she would give him his very own bedroom when she’s at work.

I think he likes this arrangement better than the kennel, but, I can’t make him understand why he has to be separated. But, we miss playing with each other. Bent Creek

I also want to add that every day he gets a fresh butcher bone.

I do not.

But, all of that to explain why Miles isn’t in any of these pictures.

Ears on top of my head, tongue hanging completely out of my head, tail wagging... yep, I'm having a blast.

I love mud. REALLY love the stuff. I don’t think I ever knew this before. But, I discovered it the other day when we were walking and … holy guacamole! it’s fun stuff.

This place is just so much fun. There are so many smells and most of the time, we don’t see anyone.

Blossom lets me run off leash and let me tell you: I am building some serious muscles. She walks about 3 miles, I run about 10. There is nothing more exciting than running through the woods leaping like a deer.

So, that’s all for today. I hope you all are having a really fabulous day and that you find a patch of woods to fill your soul soon.

no no no no… it’s not time to get up!

Okay… well, this is how I like to sleep and especially how I like to wake up.

miles-toad-holdingpawsSince my post yesterday, when I said that Miles was “sensitive,” he’s been quite upset with me. As soon as he read it, he wouldn’t even look at me.
“What’s wrong, Miles?” I implored, knowing.
“I’m fine.” He lied.
I knew not to push the subject.
I gave him space and then late last night, I had a heart-to-heart with him.
We didn’t know Blossom was watching, and at first I was a little embarassed, but, Miles seemed to appreciate it, so, it’s all good.

Our walk is easy and sweet. The weather has been nuts. One day it was hot; that night a warm, sweet rain. The next day it rained all day with warm howling winds. Then we woke up this morning and it’s cold again with tiny patches of snow on cars and a chilly, cutting wind. But, the sun is shining so bright today and the purples and pinks of the sunrise over the Blue Ridge Mountains was spectacular.

ToadprofileOkay. Now, it’s time for another nap.

I know. I know. I shouldn’t post shots this sexy.

p.s. Blossom ordered the FURminator!

Milepost 417 on the Blue Ridge Parkway

Milepost 417 has a beautiful mountain stream with one main waterfall (not pictured) and many cascading beauties like this one.

ok… I thought the weekend adventures were over, but, Sunday morning, Blossom loaded Miles and I in the car and we went to Sunday brunch at Mayfel’s in downtown Asheville, NC.

She hitched us to the fence and we hung out on the sidewalk beside her and lots of people came by and petted us. Some days, you can just feel the love, can’t ya? Miles even went belly up for this one super-sweet blue-eyed guy.

After brunch was over, we got back in the car and headed for our favorite hike, milepost 417 on the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP). It’s about a 45 minute drive, mostly with breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains from the parkway.

ParkwayMap-417Commonly called, “America’s Favorite Drive,” the Blue Ridge Parkway is celebrating is 78th anniversary as a product of the New Deal effort to provide jobs during the Great Depression. The parkway covers 469 miles from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina to the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia.

With all the hiking trails, waterfalls, rolling mountain vistas, I feel so lucky that the BRP is so close to Asheville, NC, where I live.

The trail is located just across the road from the Looking Glass Overlook. From Asheville, follow the parkway South and count the mileposts and when you reach milepost 417, you’re at the spot.

This is one of the log stairways that is built into the hillside.

The trail is clearly marked and has lots of boulders and smaller rocks, several log stairways and sweet, wet air. Miles and I ran and ran and ran — oh and we had a buddy join us, Dande.

Dande ran even faster than us, running circles and circles and then she would run back to Miles and lick his mouth.

When we approached the waterfall, Blossom was worried because there’s this small bridge with railing one one side and well, we have a problem with the notion of “single file.” So, she quickly ushered us across with her human buddy and she and her camera gear followed behind.

Once we crossed the bridge, we scooted up the trail and up and over the mountain winding through more lush rhododendrons, moss-covered rocks and log stairs built into the hillside. So much to see! So much to smell!

I wanted to sniff all of it.

My older brother, Miles. Usually, he’s much more dainty than he looks in this photo.

Then, it came time to turn around. Dande, Miles and me were all feeling so good from all of our running. I overheard Blossom’s friend call the trail that we were on a “goat trail.” I don’t know what that means, but, I like goats. I think.

It is a rocky, uneven trail, but, sooo much fun and not too strenuous at any point —easy uphills and downhills.

When we returned to the waterfall, Blossom really wanted some photos and we were now calm enough to be trusted around the water and somewhat slick rocks. She still moved quickly across the bridge and went down to the stream where it would be safe for us. I think she’s disappointed that she was too worried about us to get a photo of the main waterfall, but, she climbed down a bank, holding on to roots, scurrying around and over boulders, then a little light rock hopping and finally got a good shot of a smaller cascade of water.

I was worried about her! I mean, she was out on that rock in the middle of the stream and I thought she was going to slip and fall! Dande followed her out and stood on a tiny rock in the stream and howled at her to get to shore.

After Blossom took the photos she wanted, we continued on the trail back to the parking lot.

It was a long drive back home, but, I remember very little of it. zzzzz
